A Race We Must Win."[4] The goal of the summit was to further climate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to prevent the mean global temperature from rising by more than than 1.five °C (2.7 °F) above preindustrial levels. Sixty countries were expected to "announce steps to reduce emissions and support populations most vulnerable to the climate crisis" including French republic, a number of other European countries, pocket-sized island countries and India.[v] To increase force per unit area on political and economic actors to reach the aims of the meridian, a global climate strike was held around the earth on 20 September with over four million participants.[half dozen]

The results of the elevation were meaning though it is believed that they were not plenty to limit the rise of global temperature to less than 1.5 degrees every bit needed to accost the climate crisis. People's republic of china did not increase its Paris agreement commitments, India did not pledge to reduce its use of coal, and the U.S. did not even speak at the briefing.[7] Even so, of import commitments were made in many areas and the organizers alleged that: "Peak initiatives were designed to ensure the actions undertaken would be fair for all, supporting jobs and clear air for improve health, and protect the about vulnerable, as well as new initiatives on adaptation, agriculture and early warning systems that volition protect 500 1000000 additional people confronting the impacts of climate change."[7]

On the web, a page called "Announcements" independent printing releases about the results of the pinnacle.[viii] Printing releases with information about the issue were as well published in September 2019, in the section "Press Materials"[9] The data is also stored in the UN portal of climate action "NAZCA"[10]

Russia is the fourth largest emitter of greenhouse gases (GHG). The targets for Russia in the agreement are reducing the emissions by xxx% from the level of 1990 by the year 2030. The emissions of Russia in 2017 were already 32% lower than in 1990, then in fact the pledge does not decrease them. But equally Russia has a growing economy relying primarily on fossil fuels, this will have some furnishings. Russian forests likewise play a role in removing CO2 from the atmosphere.[17] [18] [19]

The commitments of the summit are not enough to limit the rise of global temperature to less than i.5 degrees, equally needed to accost the climate crisis. António Guterres, the Secretary General of the United nations, said at the shut of the pinnacle: "Much more is needed to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 and proceed temperature ascent to 1.5 degrees by the end of the century."[27] Andrew Steer, the president of the World Resources Establish, said that: "most of the major economies fell woefully brusk" of increasing their targets. Those who promise to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 are unsure how to do it.[28]

"This is all wrong. I shouldn't be up here. I should exist dorsum in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope? How cartel you! Yous have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I'm one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction. And all you lot can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economical growth. How dare you!"[36]

At her advent, Thunberg announced that she and 15 other children including Alexandria VillaseƱor, Catarina Lorenzo, and Carl Smith were filing a lawsuit confronting five nations that are not on rail to meet the emission reduction targets they committed to in their Paris Agreement pledges: Argentina, Brazil, France, Federal republic of germany, and Turkey. The lawsuit is challenging the nations under the UN's Convention on the Rights of the Child (specifically the right to life, wellness, and peace). If the complaint is successful, the countries volition be asked to reply, but whatever suggestions aren't legally binding.[37] [38]
